Why didn't you submit to ARECLS?

Hello ECLS colleagues,

The deadline for ARECLS submissions has passed for another year. From the looks of things there were about a dozen submissions, which is a pretty poor turnout for such a large school. So my question is: if you didn't submit (and chances are, you didn't) why not? What can ARECLS do to convince you to submit next year?

Why submit? Here are a few reasons:

-you get a publication credit, which will be key to getting an academic job once you've completed your studies

I'm working off-campus and don't have access to Nvivo, one of the more popular software packages for managing qualitative data. I've been looking around for some freeware that I could use instead, and came across AnSWR, freeware that works similarly to Nvivo put out by the US centre for disease prevention and control. Has anyone ever come across or used AnSWR before? So far the installation process has been fraught with random error messages, and I'm thinking that it might have a lot of bugs ...

Let's socialize!

Hi all,

As some of ECLS students are from different areas of the world with varying experiences and views, it seems a good idea (to me at least ) to sit together and exchange ideas and experiences in an informal way. I hope to see this happens on a weekly or biweekly basis. It's not all about the academic efforts we involve in but also about developing other skills and ways of thinking and looking at the world.

Any suggestions!!!!?

Hi everybody,

If anyone is interested in taking a language course here in Newcastle, the Centre for Lifelong Learning is a good place to start:

http://cll.sunderland.ac.uk/

They offer 10 week courses in a huge variety of languages, and at fairly good prices (£33 for students). Plus they are based on Newcastle University campus.

Most courses this term start in the second week of October.

I've attended language classes at CLL before, and will again this year (although ...

I’m posting a link to an article entitled ‘The Production of Whiteness in Education: Asian International Students in a College Classroom’ (DiAngelo, 2006).

While I do not necessarily endorse the positions taken in this article and certainly have reservations with the methodology and constructs employed, it resonates with recent personal experiences in higher education and I feel it may be an interesting stepping stone for discussion.

What do you think?
